Everyman Theatre
I have just been to the matinee pantomime this afternoon. I have taken my grandchildren to the Everyman pantomime every year for about 3 years now and they have always thoroughly enjoyed it. My grandchildren are now 9 and 5 years so obviously they started going at an early age and there has never been a problem. This year we took my grandson who is two and a half. He was very excited and looking forward to it however the opening scene was so frightening that he was so upset that my daughter had to take him down to the lounge and he was too frightened to return. I am very disappointed that the producer felt that it was acceptable to produce such a frightening scene as a start to the production. Pantomimes are meant to be for the whole family including young children and we did not feel this scene was appropriate. It did nothing to enhance the overall production in fact I am sure my grandson would have enjoyed the show had it not been for the scary start. He was not the only child affected there was another little girl who sat in the lounge with her grandparents for the whole of the show and there were other children in the audience who I could hear crying right from the start of the show. There was no warning given that this scene may not be suitable for young children which could have helped because we would have delayed taking him in. As my daughter and my grandson did not see any of the show I feel that as a gesture of good will we should be given a refund for the cost of the two tickets. I just hope this will not have a lasting afffect on my grandson and that he will want to go to the theatre in future and enjoy what should be a happy family occasion.
