The home of the Giant Grasshopper engine a working example of the giant steam pumps built in the 1870s and used to clear water from the Mersey Railway Tunnel. A video presentation tells the story of the construction of the Mersey Railway Tunnel the Pump and the building itself and ends with a view of the Giant in action. Have lived in Birkenhead all my life and did not know about this place till i came across it on the internet. What an amazing thing to see and the story behind it is brilliant. Told lots of people about it and they the same as me never new it was there. Have called again on 2 seperate occasions and it has been closed on both occasions. Why is this piece of historic engineering not advertised and why does it always seem to be closed. If it was in London you would que for hours to get in to see this. Come on Wirral Council.

Today, I travelled from Southport with the idea to visit the Steam engine in the shore Road Pumping Station only to find that it was not open. I enquired at the ferry terminal if there was a reason for the closure. I checked earlier in the week regarding opening times but no warning of the station being closed. I had a similar experience regarding the Town Hall Museum. Both these venues are stilled advertised as open to the public. I am interested to know the reason for the closures and no warning given.
